When it comes to boating, the journey begins well before you reach the water. Trailering might seem like a chore, but when it’s done right it’s smooth sailing from the driveway to the docks. Here are some tips to master trailering:
Tip #1 Choose the Right Trailer
Remember to match your boats weight and all of its cargo with the trailer’s capacity. Check the plate for max capacity and gross vehicle weight rating. Also ensure it fits your boat’s dimensions.
Tip #2 Trailer Bunks, Rollers & Hull Support
Make sure to inspect, maintain and replace when needed. These are essential for your boat’s integrity and can incur damage overtime.
Tip #3 Hitching
A secure connection is vital. Confirm the size of the hitch ball required for the trailer. For most boat trailers under 30 feet, they will use a 2 inch ball hitch. Once you’ve secured the ball hitch and the locking pin is in place, cross your safety chains and secure them to the vehicle’s hitch. This is a safety measure should the hitch fail.
Tip #4 Trailer Lighting & Breaking
Lights are the silent communicators on the road. You’ll need to connect the trailer wiring harness into your vehicle’s receiver to synchronize the lights and power the trailer’s breaking system. Test to make sure that they are operating with your vehicle correctly.
Tip #5 Tire Maintenance
Check for wear and tear regularly. Dry rot is sneaky, protect them from the elements and always keep a spare tire, jack and tools handy.
Tip #6 Proper Loading & Balance
Appropriate weight distribution is a game changer. Check your boat’s centering. Adjust tongue weight and consult your owner’s manual for specific instruction.
Tip #7 Master Maneuvering
Practice makes perfect. Begin in an empty space, take it slow and maybe have a spotter for an extra set of eyes.
